What are the solutions when you lose your hair?

Are you wondering why you are losing a lot of hair and how to fix it? This blog is for you.

Since Antiquity, hair has been loaded with symbols and is often associated with seduction and strength. It allows us to assert ourselves and/or express ourselves through the cuts or hairstyles that we choose.

There are a thousand and one ways to style hair. They can be short, long, straight, curly, light or dark. However, everyone is trained in the same way and has the same needs.

How your hair cycle works

Focus on how the hair cycle works for a better understanding.

Hair development is cyclical and includes four phases:

  • A growth phase (anagen phase)

This phase lasts several years (generally 2 to 4 years for men and 3 to 6 years for women) and determines the length of our hair. During this phase, hair grows approximately 1 cm in 28 days. Up to 90% of hair follicles are in this phase.

  • A phase of stopping hair growth (catagen phase)

The catagen phase concerns 1 to 2% of all hair. The hair stops growing and detaches from the blood system and the dermal papilla. The latter contains the cells responsible for producing new hair.

  • A resting phase (telogen phase)

This phase results in hair loss and lasts between 2 and 6 months. During this, the old hair no longer grows, and the new hair begins its growth cycle. About 10-15% of hair is in this phase. The process of hair growth involves progression of new growth towards the surface, resulting in the expulsion of the old follicle.

  • The expulsion phase (exogenous phase)

This is the last stage of the hair cycle. During this, the oldest hairs fall from the scalp and are replaced by new hairs.

So you will have understood, each hair follicle is not in the same cycle at the same time !

Possible causes of hair loss

Hair loss can take various forms. We will not talk here about androgenic alopecia, which is genetic hair loss.

It is normal to lose hair, on average we lose between 50 and 100 per day. It becomes less normal when you lose a larger amount.

The main causes of hair loss:

  • The stress

After a period of stress, hair follicle activity may be interrupted prematurely, causing significant hair loss. This phenomenon can be caused by intense emotional shock or long-term stress, for example.

    • Hormonal disorders

Often linked to a decrease in estrogen hormones, which can occur during menstruation, following childbirth or during menopause.

      • Diet

It is possible to have nutritional deficiencies that accelerate hair loss. Iron, vitamin B, copper or zinc are trace elements/vitamins to monitor in the event of severe hair loss.

        • Medication

Certain treatments could accentuate hair loss, such as chemotherapy which causes loss of all hair on the human body. But there are more ordinary medications such as the contraceptive pill, certain anticoagulants, antidepressants, thyroid treatment, retinoids which could be the cause.

          • The tobacco

Tobacco reduces cell oxygenation and causes poor irrigation of the scalp.

            • The change of season

It often happens that in the fall or spring, hair loss accelerates. This phenomenon is essentially linked to overexposure to the sun during the summer, which is felt in autumn. Lack of light in winter causes illness, cold, fatigue, and all of this disrupts the hair cycle with repercussions in spring.

The ideal routine to combat hair loss

Now that you have better insight into the possible causes of significant hair loss, let's see how to deal with it!

              • Identify and treat the source of stress:

It is desirable to recognize the cause of stress in order to reduce it. Practices such as meditation, sport or yoga can be good tools to help you reduce stress.

                • Have a good diet:

Diet is important in hair quality. A balanced diet including whole grains, fruits and vegetables, proteins and good fats should be favored. Adding a hair supplement to your routine can provide essential nutrients and vitamins hair growth and help strengthen the body's resistance to stress.

                  • Taking care of your scalp:

For healthy hair, you also need to take care of your scalp. It must be healthy and well irrigated in order to provide the hair follicles with the oxygen and nutrients necessary for hair growth. For this, it is advisable to perform self-massages , oil baths and scalp scrubs.

Massages help regulate circulatory flows and thus stimulate blood microcirculation. The hair bulbs are better irrigated and the hair becomes stronger and more resistant.

We also advise you to rinse your hair with cold water to activate blood microcirculation and give a boost to hair bulbs.

                    • Heating devices to avoid:

We do not recommend the use of heating devices on a daily basis, which extremely weaken the hair fiber. It is important to space out the use of these heat sources which will, over time, make your hair dull and brittle.

If you have no other choice, we advise you to use devices where you can adjust the heating temperature. Ideally, set the temperature so that it is below 200°C for devices such as straighteners and curling irons. Also, using cold air for the hair dryer would limit breakage.

                      • Type of hairstyle to avoid:

Hairstyles that are too tight, such as a bun or a ponytail, should also be banned from your daily life. We advise you to alternate hairstyles “tight” with loose hairstyles to prevent hair from weakening and breaking.

                        • Chemical attacks to be banned:

Most people think that hair color is the cause of hair problems. But when they are carried out well and infrequently, the use of treatments helps protect the hair fiber. It is obvious that the coloring and discoloration should be avoided as much as possible but if you have no choice, don't forget to pay particular attention to the quality of the treatments used.

We also advise you to limit the use of shampoo as much as possible and space them out as much as possible.
